Snow

Denver is getting approximately 1inch of snow an hour with 20-30mph winds. I am supposed to be flying out to Jacksonville, but Denver International Airport is now closed.

Update: A state of emergency has been declared. My flight for tomorrow has been canceled.

Update: -9am 12/21- My flight is now leaving at 7pm, but I will have to spend the night in Houston and fly to Jacksonville on Friday morning. It is still snowing and the city is saying it will be another 24 hours before side streets are clear. I am not optimistic about getting out of here.

Update: -11am 12/21- It’s official. After 25 consecutive years, this will be the first Christmas I do not spend with my family. My flight has been canceled. It’s still snowing, the plows that were out have been recalled so the National Guard can move the abandoned cars that are blocking there path. The streets aren’t expected to be clear until tomorrow afternoon, when the airport re-opens. The airline says the earliest they can get me to Jacksonville is the 27th. I am still holding out hope that someone else will cancel their flight on Saturday or Sunday and I can book that… I didn’t make it to the first floor of my building, but there are a few pictures on my flickr page.

Update: -4pm 12/21- So it looks like Kyllan and I will be spending our first Christmas together. The snow has stopped and the plows are back out. Sitting at home by myself was not an option, so I will be driving to Dallas sometime this weekend. From there I will catch a flight to Jacksonville with Kyllan for my parents’ New Year’s Eve party. (She was already planning to go. ) It’s the same airline, but they would not change my ticket to Dallas. They wanted to charge me a bunch of fees if I did anything other than fly out of DIA or another small airport 194 miles away. It was cheaper for me to just cancel my ticket and buy a new one online. Yes, the online ticket was cheaper than what the rep on the phone could give me… I miss my family’s Christmas tree.

  1. William, we are so sorry. We just saw on our local news that people are stranded at the airport….I said to Scott, check the blog to see what William was up to. We’re so sorry to see that you hadn’t made it out before the storm. You’ll get there though! Keep us posted. When are you visiting Kyllan?

    Hang in there!

  2. Dang, yeah I remember when I had a layover in Denver one year coming from New Orleans to Sacramento and it took an hour for them to de-ice the plane, but I guess at least I got to take off. So what are they gonna do about your flight?

  3. Hey Cody-

I am praying that all goes well, and you get home by Saturday. I’ll be optomistic on your behalf…We’re leaving Friday, and I’d love to see you.

  4. I posted last night, but I don’t see it here — a few others haven’t showed up either — are you censoring me?

Anyway, last night, Scott and I saw the news and immediately checked the blog. We were sorry to hear that your flight was cancelled.

We are going to cross our fingers and pray that something will work out for you. At least you aren’t at the airport…heard them talking to a lady on the news that was stranded there and they were covered in newspapers to keep warm. How sad for everyone.

    Keep us posted.

  5. Kim P., You post was caught by my spam filter. I not sure words tripped it, though. (Yes, just like E-mail spam, there is blog spam. The blog received 45 in the last 12 hours. Sorry if I deleted a previous comment caught by the filter. There has just been so much of it lately that I have been deleting it without reading.) It’s up now. I’ll do a better job of looking through things caught by the filter in the future. If you register (bottom of right sidebar, it shouldn’t happen again.) The other news story here are the merchants that are missing out on all of that last minute shopping business. That really sucks if you own your own store… When am I going to visit Kyllan? I may be in Dallas for Christmas. I’ll post an update after If I can get something worked out.

  6. I registered. I’ve been through a few of those types of storms in my life….I didn’t have to travel though so I can’t imagine what you are going through.

I hope that you are staying safe and warm though! What a rotten time for a storm. (We are supposed to get snow Christmas Eve/Christmas. Unbelievable — we can’t get away from it!)

  7. Kim P, great, now you can go back and edit your comments too.

At least I’m not stuck in the airport with small children or a business owner counting on these last few shopping days. (The Friday and Saturday before Christmas are the busiest shopping days of the year; “Black Friday” is 5th.)

  8. Hey Cody-

At least you’re spending Christmas w/ a loved one!!! I don’t know how long the drive is to Dallas, but be safe, try not to hit any deer and stay alert! We’ll miss each other this season…I am going back to Raleigh on the 28th. I’m sure we’ll get up soon enough.

    Merry Christmas Cody and Kyllan!

  9. William, I hope you are in Florida, Dallas or someplace other that Denver. I see you are getting blasted with snow again. There’s something about Denver, snow, and Holidays.
