I meant to post earlier about the lab. How do I like it? I love it. I have no idea where the state of Colorado came up with the money for this place. It is beautiful. Core facilities, prep rooms, on-site freezer programs and I’ve never seen seen administration and facilities run so efficiently. I spare you the particulars. Let’s just say I once dreamed of the perfect place to do research, and it wasn’t this nice. Below are a couple of pictures of the unboxing two weeks ago. You would have to go a few pages back to find them in my flickr account. This is of one of our two bays. And yes, you can see snow capped mountains from my PI’s office. I will have to take some better pictures of the view sometime this week.
Nice lab William. So what’s in all of those boxes anyway? Was there any worry of things not surviving the trip? How did you get it all moved there? Since you mentioned that your lab was moving I’ve wondered how that get’s pulled off. For me it would just be a matter of moving a couple of tables. 🙂
thermocyclers, centrifuges, electrophoresis units and books, books and more books. We were very worried about things not surviving the trip and are still going through the last boxes to try and find a few items. No casualties yet. A moving company moved us. The same company moved the lab, my bosses house and my apartment. It was arranged so it would all be on the same truck. We filled the entire truck. We had to ship a lot of our biological samples on dry ice by FedEx.
Someone at the university stored them in a -80c freezer until re arrived to put them in ours. It was an expensive ordeal. The university paid for the lab and PI’s move. The lab will be reimbursing me for mine.
A couple of tables? One day you will move and realize just how much junk magically appears in a house over a few short years.
I meant moving my lab would only be a couple of tables. 🙂 Oh, pens too.
…Oh, sorry. Your boss tells you that he is going to put in an application for an open position. Everyone in the lab begins to worry about there job; Do they move their family or try to find a new one? The boss tells everyone that he doesn’t think he will get an offer. He goes on interviews and pretends that he was not impressed when he returns. He announces one day that he is moving the lab and tells everyone that they have until ___ date to decide if they are coming are not. You decide it will be easier to finish quickly with him than to stay and start over. He tells you to over see the packing of the tables and pens. You arrive in a strange city where you know no one. Your boss then tells you to unpack the chairs and pens. Your boss then forgets that you just moved across the country and wants to know what the hell you’ve been doing for the past two weeks and where is his data.
This is definitely nicer than the old lab. I love that it has window. I used to feel like we were in a dungeon at Tulane. Well in a way we were, I could barely get signal for my texts!
And LOL at your comment #4. That sucks!
