I am so thrilled that I was able to watch the events of this evening unfold and Barack Obama be declared President of the United States of America. There are really no words to express how I feel right now, but it was truly overwhelming to read the headlines, and browse at all the comments from friends on facebook who are truly inspired and humbled by this experience. It is such a great tribute to the many that fought hard for us to even have this historic opportunity. William and I are excited to have such powerful examples in the White House for us and for our children, and I know there are others who feel the same way. We cannot wait to see what the future holds and look forward to great things to come!
I lay in bed tossing and turning at 1am, I was too excited to sleep! I don’t know how to describe how I was feeling but it was truly wonderful! I kept thinking of the song from The Whiz, “Can You Feel a Brand New Day”.
This has really made me feel hopeful again. I’m so proud to have him as our president! We are lucky that this happened at such a fairly young age in my life. I really believe that change is coming and he’ll have us back in the right direction!
Soon after the results I went into Drew’s room, still in awe of the history that had just unfolded. I got on my knees next to Drew’s bed, put my hands on him and the tears started streaming. I thanked God that His will had been done. I reflected on the fact that all of the struggle, pain, disrespect, death and intimidation endured by the men before us had finally paid off in an overwhelmingly tangible way. My son Drew’s life as a Black Man in America will be a little easier. When he woke up the next day I told him that he could be ANYTHING he wanted to be and he enthusiastically said “Of course”! It is definitely the dawn of a brand new day.
