17 weeks… and a couple days…. of pregnancy

Wow… I guess we have a lot of catching up to do!

Today, Tuesday, I am 17 weeks and 2 days pregnant.

We found out I was pregnant about a week before Thanksgiving.  I was tired all week and was pretty moody also 🙂  (Sorry William… I love you!).  I had a suspicion I may be pregnant.  I took a pregnancy test earlier in the week and it was negative, but a few days later, those life changing words appeared on the screen of that little stick…. “pregnant”.  That one word causes about 10 different emotions to overtake you from fear to joy (joy being predominant).  I debated on how to tell William and since it was close to bedtime, I left the test on his nightstand so he would see it before he turned his lamp off….or so I thought.  When William came in the room to go to bed, he somehow missed it, turned his light off and got in the bed.  🙂  So, I had to tell him I left something on his nightstand for him to see.  After turning the light back on and squinting to see what was on the screen, he was excited and had s big smile on his face.  Then he realized he was mad that I didn’t tell him that I was going to take a test, but he got over it.  I took a few more tests just to “confirm” I was really pregnant 🙂

When we went for our first OB appointment at 6 weeks, we were able to get an ultrasound and see and hear the heartbeat!  It was amazing and made everything feel real.

A few weeks later, on Christmas, we shared the good news with our parents.  They are of course, very excited.  This will be the second grandchild for my parents and the first for William’s.

Since then, the weeks seem to be passing slow and fast at the same time.  One the one hand, I feel like… wow… I am only 17 weeks pregnant.. why is this going so slow.  On the other hand, I think… OH MY GOODNESS… in less than 23 weeks, we will have a baby!!

Anyway… I have been extremely blessed with a drama-free pregnancy.  I remember thinking after getting the positive pregnancy test that my morning sickness would kick in any day.  Week 5 rolled by… nothing.  Week 6, I heard this is where it may start to kick in… nothing.  Week 7, 8, 9… still nothing.  By then, I am thinking I only have a few weeks left in the first trimester, so perhaps I just won’t be sick, and that is exactly what happened.  I may have had a few minutes of nausea here or there, but that usually occurred when my stomach was empty and a granola bar did the trick.

I have experienced a few symptoms, but nothing to really complain about.  One symptom I had is extreme exhaustion.  The first few weeks were ROUGH.  I was tired all the time.  It is AMAZING how much energy such a tiny being can suck out of you, but after all, my body was literally working hard to form an entire human being.  They equate it to your body running a marathon.  Your body is forming organs, pumping more blood and causing your heart rate to increase.  I fell asleep on the couch almost every night (seriously) until about 2 weeks ago.  It seems to have calmed a bit, I assume symbolizing that the major development (organs, skin, limbs, etc.) is complete.  It’s almost 10pm and I am still awake!!  This time a few weeks ago, I would have been long gone with drool coming out the corner of my mouth and William tapping me on the shoulder and telling me to go to bed.  Oh… that reminds me of another pregnancy symptom William claims I have.  Snoring.  Apparently hormones are to blame for just about every pregnancy symptom you have, including the bloating and gas I had during the first 10 weeks or so that caused me to look pregnant already in the picture William posted on New Years! 🙂  William thought it was the craziest thing ever that in the morning, I looked “normal”, but at night, I looked “very pregnant” because I was so bloated.  I still get a bit bloated after meals, but not nearly as bad as before.  I am actually developing a baby bump at this point that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, so now I get to hear “you are sooo pregnant”, every day from William 🙂  I can’t imagine what he is going to say at 40 weeks.  He seems to notice the changes more than I do, but I haven’t been able to get him stop looking at me since August of 2002, so I guess it makes sense.

My plan is to make new post each week on Saturday when I begin a new week along with my “bump” photos and any exciting new developments for the week.  We have taken a few already (not as consistent as we should have… I didn’t want to take pictures of my bloat… lol).   I think we have pictures from Week 13, 14, and 17.  I am hoping to stay faithful with the weekly photos for the rest of the pregnancy.

The next big announcement will of course be the baby’s gender.  We are hoping we will find out next Monday when we have another ultrasound.  William is convinced we are having a girl (even though he would love to have a boy and would probably feel more comfortable with a boy).  I think we are having a boy (mainly because I think I secretly want a girl).  I seem to automatically think of a girl when I think about our future baby.  Both of us will be excited no matter what.  As clichéd as it may sound, all we truly want is a healthy baby.

I think that covers the highlights for now.

According to BabyCenter.com, here is what’s going on this week for baby and me:

How your baby’s growing:

Head to rump, your baby is about 5 1/2 inches long (about the length of a bell pepper) and he weighs almost 7 ounces. He’s busy flexing his arms and legs — movements that you’ll start noticing more and more in the weeks ahead. His blood vessels are visible through his thin skin, and his ears are now in their final position, although they’re still standing out from his head a bit. A protective covering of myelin is beginning to form around his nerves, a process that will continue for a year after he’s born. If you’re having a girl, her uterus and fallopian tubes are formed and in place. If you’re having a boy, his genitals are noticeable now, but he may hide them from you during an ultrasound.

How your life’s changing:

Hungry? An increase in appetite is pretty common about now. Make it count by choosing meals and snacks that are rich in nutrients instead of empty calories (chips, French fries, candy, and other sweets). Bigger, more comfortable clothes are a must now as your appetite and waistline grow.

Your cardiovascular system is undergoing dramatic changes, and during this trimester your blood pressure will probably be lower than usual. Don’t spring up too fast from a lying or sitting position or you might feel a little dizzy.

From now on, when you do lie down, it’s best to lie on your side — or at least partly tilted to one side. (When you lie flat on your back, your uterus can compress a major vein, leading to decreased blood return to your heart.) Try placing a pillow behind you or under your hip or upper leg for comfort.

If you haven’t already had a second-trimester ultrasound, you’ll probably have one soon. This painless procedure helps your practitioner check how your baby’s growing, screen for certain birth defects, check the placenta and umbilical cord, determine whether the due date you’re working with is accurate, and see how many babies you’re carrying. During the exam, you might see your baby moving around or sucking his thumb. Bring your partner along, and be sure to ask for a printout for your baby’s first photo album!

Happy 2011!

William and I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas celebration full of lots of great holiday memories!  We also hope your New Year is enriched with abundant blessings and tremendous joy.  William and I certainly believe that God has great things in store for us in 2011, so hopefully we (especially me) will do a better job blogging about those events.

Adios 2010.

Happy New Year!!!

Brandon’s wedding

A couple weeks ago, William and I traveled to Cleveland for the wedding of my cousin Brandon.  It was a fun weekend and a beautiful wedding.  No to mention,  it is always good to see family.  I wish we could have stayed a few more days, but it was still nice.  Pictures from the wedding weekend are posted on Flickr. Congratulations Brandon and April!

Oahu

Our first stop in our Hawaiian tour was the island of Oahu.  Oahu is probably what many people are familiar with since it is home to the capital city, Honolulu, and Waikiki Beach, and is the most populous of all of the Hawaiian islands (75% of the state’s population).  Interestingly enough, it is not the largest island, but the 3rd largest island.

We stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, which I would definitely recommend for anyone visiting the island.  There are several shops and restaurants on the property giving you lots to explore.  They also have several pools and a lagoon.  The beach was quite nice and not too crowded.

We arrived late Wednesday afternoon and did not do much besides get situated in our rooms, plan some excursions, get some food and get some sleep.

On Thursday, we had a full day.  We visited the Polynesian Cultural Center.  The Polynesian Center has created mini villages representing the islands of Hawaii, Fiji, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, and New Zealand.  At each village, you learn about the culture of that island, sample foods, etc.  In Hawaii, we learned a hula dance, and sampled Poi (the staple food in Hawaii made from the taro plant).  In Samoa, we leaned that the men do all of the cooking, watched  a guy make fire from two pieces of wood, saw him crack open a coconut and get coconut milk and also watched a man climb a coconut tree in about 10 seconds.  There was also a canoe parade where each of the islands had canoes and performed traditional dances.  It was very colorful and neat to watch.  Of course we did not leave without taking part in a luau where we feasted on traditional Hawaiian cuisine.  There was also a performance at the end of the night called “Ha, Breath of Life”.  It was a bit hard to follow, but was interesting to watch.

On Friday, we took an island tour and made stops at several touristy attractions like the Dole Plantation where the specialty was Pineapple ice cream (it was actually better than I thought it would be).  We also made stops at several beautiful beaches, including the North Shore where you can typically see surfers attempting 30 foot waves in the months of December and January.  I always had the impression that Maui had the prettiest beaches in Hawaii and they absolutely do have some beautiful beaches, but Oahu has a few beautiful beaches as well.  Hanauma Bay is definitely one of the beaches in Oahu that William and I would like to return to.  The water was a beautiful blue and the sand was fine and sugary. 🙂  One of the most interesting stops was at a place called the Pali Lookout, where we experienced what felt like Hurricane strength winds (it is amazing what the trade winds are like in that area).  You will see several pictures on Flickr where my hair is standing straight up because of the wind!!

On our last day in Oahu before embarking on our cruise, we visited the most popular Hawaiian tourist destination, Pearl Harbor.  It was an awesome experience.  Very humbling.  I learned more about the events of December 7, 1941 and the lives lost on the USS Arizona and many other battleships that day.  We also visited the USS Missouri, which was the last battleship built by the US and is where Japan surrendered to end WWII.  I think that was one of William’s favorite parts.  Guys love battleships.  I actually enjoyed touring the USS Bowfin.  William says that Naval history is one of my new hobbies, but this it NOT the case.  I just enjoyed learned about the capabilities of submarines.

After our visit to Pearl Harbor, we packed up and headed to board the Pride of America on embark on our Hawaiian journey.  Our itinerary is below.

Pictures from Oahu and Pearl Harbor are on Flickr. Click on the links to see them.

More to come….

Aloha!

I know we have been awful at posting recently, but as usual, William and I have been busy lately.  The good news is that we finally get a break and will hopefully have lots of posts to make soon.  Why the sudden change?  William and I are headed on a much needed vacation to Hawaii!  We will be spending a few days in Honolulu and then departing on a cruise to go island hopping on some of the other islands.  The trip is actually William’s graduation present from his parents, but with the moves, job changes, and everything else, we did not get to go sooner than now.  During our trip, we will also be celebrating our 3rd wedding anniversary!  In honor of our anniversary, I have posted two photos.  The first is the very first picture William and I took together (it was around October 2002, about a month after our first date.  Look how young and skinny we were!!).  The second photo is self explanatory.

More posts to come…

Costco v. Sam’s v. Grocery Stores

About a week ago, I went to Costco and left disappointed…and it was not the first time.  I often cannot find the brand or item I am looking for.  I have not shopped at Sam’s in a while, but I feel that when I shopped at Sam’s before, the selection was much better.  Now… before you think I am completely crazy… I do agree that Costco in general is much cleaner, more organized, and with certain products like their store made pasta, salads, and other heat and eat items are much better than Sam’s, but I still somehow feel I am wasting my money with the membership.  I think one of the difficulties for me personally is that since we are only a family of two people, I do not have a need to buy many items in bulk.  I typically don’t buy meat or other items in bulk.  I do like buying laundry detergent, paper products (although they did not have my select-a-size paper towels when I went last time) and other items like toothpaste in bulk, but there would be too much waste if I bought much more.  The only food items we make it through without waste are granola bars and apple juice.

My store of choice for the moment is Tom Thumb, primarily because it is MOST convenient (2 minutes away… I have timed it…only b/c I timed my route to work).  Ironically, the Neighborhood Walmart is only 6 minutes away, but the Tom Thumb seems so much closer and is the one I pass almost 100% of the time when I am driving to and from wherever.  Tom Thumb is a bit more expensive than Walmart or Super Target, but they have a decent selection of food and have been very focused on customer service (always asking you if you need assistance, although sometimes too much).  Their meat and produce is always fresh, and the one by us has a sushi bar that is actually pretty decent.

Of course my all time favorite is Central Market, but the closest one to us is 35-40 minutes away, so that is not a realistic option for general shopping needs, especially in the Texas heat.  Not to mention, the prices are definitely more expensive than the others.  Our grocery bill would probably double.

Anyway… just thought I would share my experience/dilemma and see if anyone else has feelings on the subject.

You probably just think this is a corny subject… and it probably is 🙂

2010

Hello blogosphere!
I can’t believe how long it has been since we have made a post! 2010 got off to a busy start for William and me. William started his new job and is adjusting to going from a 4 mile commute to a 35 mile commute. His commute is only a few miles shorter than my 40 mile commute to work, but I don’t have to deal with as much traffic.  That means Audible.com is getting a lot of business from the Cody family 🙂 I have actually only listened to one audio book, but William has listened to quite a few. I listen to satellite radio about 99% of the time.
Anyway… my schedule has been pretty busy as well. Work has been busy (a good thing) and I have had Saturday work functions that have absorbed some of my weekend time, so I have been a little pooped lately. By the time I get home from work, make dinner, eat, go the the gym for 30 minutes a day of cardio (or my Wednesday night beating from my trainer), I haven’t had much energy to make a blog post. Today I was able to get in a tiny nap after my work function, so I decided I had enough energy to post.
You know William has been busy when he doesn’t immediately post photos to Flickr. We should hopefully have up pictures soon from New Year’s in Jacksonville. We had a nice time. Thursday night was the annual Cody New Year’s Eve party. Friday, William and his dad got to go to the Gator Bowl and watch Bobby Bowden win his last game as coach of the Florida State Seminoles (William is a huge Florida State fan). His mother, grandmother and I went shopping 🙂 On Saturday, we attended a wedding in Palm Beach of a childhood friend of William’s. It was very nice.
Other than that, William and I have just enjoyed seeing each other at the end of each day. It’s nice to talk to him on the phone on the way home from work and say “see you at home!”. It is starting to feel like we were never apart.
Well… that is the quick update. Hopefully you will see more frequent posts.

White Christmas

Well… we were not dreaming of a White Christmas in Dallas, but we certainly got one.  William and I had the pleasure of hosting the Cody parents and William’s grandmother for Christmas.  It was very enjoyable having them here and we thoroughly enjoyed each others company.  Although their flight was several hours delayed (and diverted to San Antonio) due to a very unusual snow/ice storm in Dallas on Christmas Eve, they finally made it to the house a bit a bit after 1am.

After sleeping in a bit on Christmas day, we finally awoke, enjoyed breakfast, and opened gifts.  I have to mention that William wanted to make sure everyone had a stocking on Christmas day, so he bought stocking stuffers for everyone… including himself.  Apparently he did not realize that I was buying stocking stuffers for him (or perhaps thought I don’t know my husband that well after 5 years of dating and 2 years of marriage) because the stocking gifts he bought for himself were the EXACT stocking gifts I bought for him.  So he ended up with two of the same Blu-Ray movies and more Twizzlers (his favorite candy) than he can eat.

My sister, brother-in-law, and our nephew Drew joined us for dinner and the whole gang feasted on turkey, ham, sweet potato casserole, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, chicken spaghetti, broccoli, rolls and cornbread.  Yes… it was quite a spread.  My sister helped by making the mashed potatoes, chicken spaghetti and broccoli, but I did not mind cooking.  I have come to learn that I really enjoy cooking, and William has learned that his wife actually can cook!

For the rest of the day, we mainly sat around chatting, watching portions of the 24 hour “A Christmas Story” marathon on TBS, watching football, and napping a bit too.  It was a very nice Christmas.

The next day, we took the time to expose the Cody parents and William’s grandmother to Pinkberry, which I raved about in a previous post about my visit to L.A.  Because I had raved about it so much, the Cody’s decided they wanted to try it.  I didn’t know until Christmas day that William had already had his first Pinkberry experience.  He bought me Pinkberry gift card for my stocking, so he didn’t want to reveal why he had been without me.  He was very impressed though and was happy to go back.   On this visit, I sampled the Pomegranate, Chocolate and Passion Fruit flavors, but I still think the original flavor is best.

Despite the bad weather on Christmas Eve, we still enjoyed a great Christmas and look forward to going to Jacksonville later this week for the 5th annual Cody Christmas Eve party.

As usual, William has posted pictures on his Flickr page.

We hope you and your family enjoyed a wonderful Christmas and pray God will give you abundant blessings in 2010!
