Fight Night

Our good friends Maya and Jamaal flew down to visit this past weekend. We spent Friday catching up with one another. Saturday morning we gave them a quick tour of Dallas and, of course, took them on the obligatory trip to Pinkberry. Kyllan and Maya spent the afternoon at the spa.  Saturday night Jamaal and I attended the Pacquiao v. Clottey fight at Cowboys Stadium. We arrived early enough to watch several under cards andhad a great time. I hate to admit it, but even with good seats we spent the majority of the evening watching the enormous screen. I took plently of pictures and will try to have them up by the end of this weekend.

Busy

I can’t believe that so much time has passed since our last post. Kyllan and I have been incrediably busy, but there really hasn’t been any news to report. Things should quite down for in the next month or so and hopefully we will return to posting more frequently. Until then, we will do the best we can. This weekend my mother’s family is having a reuion. Unlike the past month, there should be plenty of pictures from the weekend’s events.

The 4th

Kyllan was in Denver this past weekend for the 4th. We had a great time hanging out time together and just relaxing. We managed to catch two movies, The Proposal and Public Enemies, while she was here. Interestingly, I found The Proposal very entertaining and didn’t really care for Public Enemies. The Proposal didn’t do anything new, but it was executed well. As predictable as The Proposal was, somehow the characters were more developed than in Public Enemies. I thought that Public Enemies had some great acting and cinematography, but the story didn’t do anything for me. It tried to  do too much with too many characters and the lack of focus left me bored.

Kyllan’s trainer was happy to hear that we continued going to the gym while she was here. We did manage to eat out quite a bit, but we keep an eye on our portion sizes.

Memorial Day

I spent the weekend with Kyllan in Dallas. It was a last minute decision, I bought the ticket Thursday night, but we managed to put together a fun filled trip.

Saturday morning I joined Kyllan as she volunteered at an event for a charity organization. Saturday evening I convinced her to see the new Star Trek movie. I had already seen it, and absolutely loved it, but couldn’t pass up an opportunity to expose my wife to quality sci-fi. And guess what? She enjoyed it! I’m telling you, Kyllan is a scifi fan, she just doesn’t know it yet. Sunday we went to church and joined Kyllan’s sister and her family for brunch. After eating we hit up the outlet mall for 50% off sales. Later we had mini-24 marathon. (We used to both watch 24, but I schedules got so busy that we have been unable to keep up.) Monday we had our own little BBQ. Pictures from the weekend are on my Flickr. A slide show is below.

Mother’s Day in Jacksonville

Kyllan and I spent Mother’s Day in Jacksonville with my parents. It was a fun-filled, yet exhausting, weekend. In between a belated  birthday celebration for Kyllan and the Mother’s Day festivities we helped my father setup his new tv and wireless internet network. There was also the traditional computer help that comes with every visit. Pictures from the trip can be found on my Flickr. A slide show of pictures from the trip is below. (The first few pictures are of Kyllan opening a birthday gift from my parents. This is NOT any type of hint concerning her and Mother’s Day.)

Cali

This past weekend, I made my LA debut.  I have traveled to many cities in the US, but had never been to California.  Since my best friend/suitemate/sorority sister from college (Crystal) lives in LA, I figured it was the perfect opportunity to go for a visit.  Since we both have busy work schedules, I only went for the weekend, but in the short time I was there, I really had a good time.  I was able to eat at several places that always get rave reviews, like Roscoe’s Chicken N Waffles, In-N-Out Burger, Pinkberry, and Pizzeria Mozza.

When I got there on Friday, it was already late, so we just went to the Grove, which is an outdoor shopping mall.  Since the Cheesecake Factory was open late that night, we were able to catch up over appetizers and cheesecake.

The next morning, we decided to head to brunch at Roscoe’s Chicken N Waffles…VERY good.  The chicken was perfectly seasoned and fried and the waffles were prepared in a way that did not make them too soft nor too crispy.  Paired with the homemade lemonade, it was a great brunch!!  After getting stuffed on chicken and waffles, Crystal and I went to get pedicures and relax from our overeating.  After a drive down Rodeo drive, we visited Westfield Century City Mall where I was introduced to my new favorite thing… Pinkberry.  Wow… I really cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this wonderfully sweet and delicious frozen yogurt treat!!  It is hard sooooo delicious… not to mention fat free!!!  You can top it with fresh fruit toppings like strawberries, raspberries, chocolate shavings, kiwi fruit, mango… even fruity pebbles!  I honestly think it was wonderfully delicious just by itself.  It has a sweet and perfectly tart taste as it is, so I was very impressed. So far they only have locations in New York and Los Angeles.  Pinkberry… please come to Dallas!!

***Star Sighting***  While at the mall, we saw Robert Downey Jr!!  Of course I did not go up and make a big deal out of it, but I hadn’t had a star sighting in a while, so I was excited.

Later that night, we decided to see Obsessed, but it was sold out and we had to go to the later showing to avoid sitting on the first row.  When we got there at 9:30 for the 10:00 showing, Crystal and I were blown away that there was already a line at least 50 people deep.  Really?  Are you sure this line is for Obsessed?  The one with Beyonce?  I mean… I like Beyonce, but wow… I was not expecting that.  Since Crystal and I went into the movie with low expectations, we were not completely disappointed.  It was actually better than either of us thought it would be.  Since Beyonce’s role was somewhat limited and I thought she had some poorly written lines, I really don’t have much to say about her performance.  Ali Larter had more of the lead role in the movie, and she was very convincing as the “obsessed”.   Before the movie, we had time to grab a quick bite at the ever popular In-N-Out Burger.  I must say that the fresh ingredients were nice, but I would not say it is the best burger I ever had.  It was very good though.

On my last day there, we enjoyed lunch at Pizzeria Mozza, a popular restaurant with an eclectic variety of pizzas.  I enjoyed a more traditional pizza, but it was good.  We also had some gelato for dessert.  Gelato was my favorite frozen treat until I tasted Pinkberry 🙂  We also traveled down to Santa Monica Pier.  There is a large beach area with an amusement park, playground, beach volleyball courts, biking path, and many more activities.  It was a great area.

A weekend was not long enough to explore the wonderful city of Los Angeles, but I do plan to return soon and explore a bit more.

Summary of trip:

  • Discovered that LA has tons of parking garages everyone that charge for parking.  The parking situation seems to be stressful… so I was not a fan of that.  Even the CVS has a parking garage!  Can I just get a plain parking lot?
  • Westfield Century City Mall had free parking for 3 hours and the best part was they have a system that has lights above parking spaces so you can quickly find a green light identifying an open parking space.  What a great invention!
  • There is a very electic variety of cultures, personalities, fashion, etc…  in California.  I enjoyed this diversity.
  • People at Santa Monica Pier thought 65 degrees was the perfect temperature to throw on the bikini and jump in the freezing cold water (wow… I was cold and needed a sweater!)
  • If you have a shiny black car, you will fit right in (I wish I could keep my car that clean)
  • Pinkberry is the best frozen treat EVER!!

I did not take as many pictures as I should have, but the few I did take are posted on flickr.  Click Here to see them.

Birthday Fun

I had a great time in Dallas this past weekend.  We did a lot of good eating at some of my favorite restaurants. I was in town for 5 days so we had time for a couple more movies than usual. I really enjoyed Monster vs. Aliens in 3-D. We saw it at the IMAX. It was no Toy Story, but if you have small children, or a child at heart like me, you should check it out a 3D viewing. (Make sure it says 3D when selecting the time & theater. Most theaters are not showing  the 3D version, and those that are only showing it on one screen.) We also saw I Love You Man. It was pretty good, but you can wait until it comes out on video. Duplicity was horribe. Do not see that movie under any circumstances. (My father happens to agree with me.) Kyllan surprised me with Dinner at Ruth Chris and we spent the night on the town. Here are a few photos from the weekend.
