What a great night! I am thrilled that Barack Obama has clinched the democratic nomination and will be a candidate for President of the United States. His speech was great. I am so excited about feeling so strongly about a candidate and am ready to put my full support behind him. It is also a great feeling to be part of such a historic moment having the first black candidate to become a major political party nominee. Wow! It will be interesting to see what transpires over the next 5 months until election day. I hope things stay positive and our nation is proud to have someone like Obama as a nominee.
That Time of Year
It’s that time of year again. I am in Boston this week for the American Society for Microbiology general meeting. This is largest conference in my field and the only one I mark on my must attend list every year. I will be in meetings and seminars all day for he next three days and I have a poster presentation Tuesday. After the conference I am traveling to Dallas to spend the weekend with Kyllan.
Reunion Pictures
Pictures from the reunion are up on my flickr page. Pictures from our visit with Neil and Noah are also up.
Family Reunion
Kyllan and I are traveling to Atlanta this weekend for a family reunion. This reunion is of my Dad’s family. Our good friend Neil will also be in Atlanta this weekend. The trip will give me and Kyllan a chance to meet his son Noah.
Anybody seeing the new Indiana Jones movie? Let me know how it is.
Presentation
I have a presentation today and just finished putting together my slides. I think I’ll start preparing a little earlier next time. I’m hoping to submit the data I am presenting for publication within the next month. I’m going to try and get a little sleep now.
Public Policy and Scientific Evidence
Any time I am browsing through (main stream media) news articles and find a science related story I feel obligated to stop and read it. The effect of scientific studies on public policy has been an increasing interest of mine since I started graduate school. (Especially with stagnating research funding under the anti-Science Bush administration.) I didn’t find this article on a survey indicating 85% of Americans wanted a Presidential debate on science all that interesting until I reached the part on other findings.
Only 19% say it is acceptable for elected officials to hold back or alter scientific reports if they conflict with their own views
What? Only 19%? Only 19!?! I had to look at that sentence for moment just to make sure I was reading it correctly. I don’t even know what to say about this. The lack of logic hurts my brain.
From the Press Release
Happy Mother’s Day
Happy mother’s day to out mothers, Betty and Sandra, and to all of out friends and family members (especially Kyllan’s friend and line sister “CP” who is celebrating her first mother’s day. )
Movies and Television
Just in case some of you were looking for movie suggestions, I thought I would share my opinions of the movies Kyllan and I saw last weekend. Iron Man was great. It was the rare comic book movie done well. I had been concerned that it was going to be a little too sci-fi for Kyllan and was shocked to see how much she enjoyed it. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an excuse to go to the theater, even if you don’t consider yourself a fan of the sci-fi/ comic book genre. Forgetting Sarah Marshall was laugh out loud funny. Probably the best comedy I’ve seen all year. It is from the same guys who made 40 year old virgin, Knocked up and Superbad. If you liked those movies, I think you would like this one too. ( I don’t think I wouldn’t recommend it to my parents.) Baby Mama was very funny, but I would still suggest the other two over it.
Finally, I was also able to convince Kyllan to watch the (re-imagined) Battlestar Galactica mini-series with me. She doesn’t want to admit it, but she enjoyed it. At some point I will get her to watch the regular television series. She just might be on the verge of becoming a sci-fi fan. I think I am going to try and get her to watch the Firefly pilot next. (She is not ready for Star Wars or Star Trek yet. She tunes out whenever aliens appear.)
Along with Kyllan and Kim, the Cody Report also had a birthday. Two years old. Kyllan didn’t even know what a blog was when I first bought up the idea.
Oh, and just for comparison with the previous post…
Happy Birthday to my sister
That’s right…. if you forgot from last year, my sister and I have back to back Birthdays, so we get to continue celebrating today. Happy Birthday Kim!
Happy Birthday Kyllan!
I would like to wish a very happy birthday to my wife, Kyllan. Luckily our timing worked out pretty well and the two of us were able to celebrate a few days early while she was still in Denver. We tried a new restaurant for dinner, but stuck to one of our regular stops for breakfast. Apparently Kyllan is a fan of Jamaican Jerk Pork Chops. Who knew? For those of you dying to find out, we managed to see Iron Man, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Baby Mama. I will save my reviews for another post. There are a few photos of our weekend on my Flickr account.
Call or Text message Kyllan now!
