The lost 7/7/07 Post

I really meant to make a post on 7/7/07. I was going to tell everyone how it had been such a lucky week for the Cody family. For those who missed it, the 2nd was my mother’s last chemo treatment. On the 6th I found out that I passed my qualifying exam at Colorado. For those that don’t know, I transfered from Tulane to Colorado (it’s just easier now that the lab is here). Passing their exam was a condition of the transfer and I was a little nervous about it, considering that I hadn’t taken a course from any of the professors giving it. I had been waiting for about 20 days to hear back from the university. (If you don’t know what the qualifying exam is, you can think of it like boards for a physician or the bar for lawyers).

Kyllan and I saw “knocked up,” “Oceans’ 13” and “Transformers” in the theaters and watched “Music and Lyrics” and “Stomp the Yard” on DVD while was in town. “Knocked up” was hilarious. It’s been a long time since I laughed that hard in a theater. I thought “Oceans’ 13” was just barely just okay, but Kyllan liked it. “Transformers” was a little campy, but I still found it very entertaining. “Music & Lyrics” was formulaic, but not necessarily predictable. For a chic flick, it was pretty good. “Stomp the Yard” was horrible. On a scale of 1 to 5, I give it a 0.5 (p<.001). I would tell you why it is so bad, but it is not worth my time to even type it out. It's back to work this week. I've been having some success in the lab recently. With the new found motivation that has come with knowing the exam is behind me, hopefully I will experience some more. Below is the mandatory photo from our trip. It is a picture of the board game "Scene It," which I beat Kyllan at three times in a row. More photos of the trip are on my flickr, including a couple of my nephew Drew, who told his Aunt KyKy that the two of them had brown thumbs and I had yellow… He later asked me if I was white..

I can't be beaten

  1. Hey,
It’s great to read a report of such wonderful things happening in the Cody family. That’s funny that Drew asked if you were white! I could just see the typical Billy William look on your face. You probably are lighter than Nathan is right now. 🙂

  2. The Cody parents also watched “Ocean’s 13” and “Knocked Up” last week. We thought some things just didn’t click in Ocean’s 13. Knocked up was funny, but we probably didn’t rate it as high as you did. I think it’s meant for the younger crowd.

  3. First, I can’t believe that you added a p-value for the rating of stomp the yard. Secondly, congrats on your qualifying exam. Thirdly, now all you need is to get your xbox back!!!! I haven’t seen Transformers yet, Tami and I are waiting for the crowds to go down.

  4. Dear William,

What great news regarding your qualifying exam. I know you are blessed. May God continue to bless you with success in the Lab with your research.
The Brown’s will venture out to the movies next weekend, this weekend we will attend my “40th” class reunion. (Did I say “40th”?)

Also, don’t mess with the organized closet or pantry, it’s a family trait, she can’t help it.

Finally, after viewing all the pictures, we can see that you both are truly, truly, truly in love with each other. Always remember to keep that same smile on your 50th wedding anniversary. I especially love the picture of you smiling while receiving the good news regarding your exam.

    See you soon!

  5. Wow! Congrats on passing the qualifying exam 😀 I’m still waiting to hear back about my board exam… it’s been 5 weeks! Oh yeah, I may get the flickr account finally.

  6. I still can’t believe Drew asked if William was white. I am still laughing at that. Who knew kids that young already begin to understand race (although Drew refers to himself as brown and not black).  Nikki- you were right about William giving Drew that typical look, although I was on the floor laughing so hard, that I did not get to witness all of his facial expressions.

The weekend was definitely more enjoyable knowing William had passed the exam since we had to spend the first couple days hoping and praying that he had. We went to celebrate at Texas de Brazil, which I am surprised William did not comment about since he really enjoyed it. Texas de Brazil is a churrascaria (Brazilian steakhouse). Highly recommend it!

  7. Niki, got jokes, huh?

Mom, I agree, “Knocked up” was definitely for a younger crowd. Like the others, “Oceans’ 13” tries to be too smart.

Tami and Neil, I had to add the p-value to let you know how serious I was. Regardless of the standard error you add due to our differing taste in movies, the stink on that movie was significant. I got my 360 back last night. Where you at Neil?

Mrs. Brown, I am glad you enjoyed the pictures. There will be many more to come. I expect to see pictures from the reunion.

    medobsession, it’s about time!

Kyllan, I think Texas de Brazil makes the list of W&K recommended Dallas Resturants (along with All Good and Grande Lux).

Everyone, thanks. I am so glad to have that exam behind me.
