Summer Post

This summer has proven to be a hectic one in the Cody house. Kyllan has started a new job, my research lab at the university is keeping me busy, Laurel now has her own social calender and Elliott has been fighting a nasty bug. However, it has not been all work and no play. We have still managed to have quite a bit of fun! I have been uploading pictures to Flickr, but have not managed to sit down and post about our adventures.

At the end of may my father received a humanitarian award from OneJax, an interfaith organization that promotes diversity. Kyllan and I were able to make it down to Jacksonville for the awards ceremony. Find the pictures here.

From the OneJax website:

This award recognizes individuals for their outstanding dedication and community service. William Cody, MD is one of four recipients of the 2014 Silver Award. Prior to joining St. Vincent’s Medical Center in 1991, Dr. Code practiced in the U.S. Naval Hospital. He spent countless hours teaching young physicians in the Family Practice Residency to care for and treat women. Dr. Cody personally delivered hundreds of babies and also supervised hospital residents. Much of the time and service he gave was uncompensated. Dr. Cody is currently the medical staff president-elect for St. Vincent’s, Riverside. He is an active member of the Deerwood Rotary Club and has enlisted the aid of his club in sponsoring nurses’ travel on the Haitian missions.

While in Florida Kyllan and I made an impromptu trip to Disney World with the Kids. It was an interesting trip, to say the least. I’ll make another post about the trip later this week.

Magic Kingdom

The month may also means Graduations, especially in the Cody house where there is a graduation every year. Here is a link to pictures from my university’s graduation and from my cousin’s graduation.

Still, Still Here

The Codys have had a lot lot going on recently, and unfortunately that has resulted in us neglecting the blog. I am declaring an end to that neglect. We will be posting more frequently around here, starting with this post and a Halloween post soon to follow.

The real reason we have been so busy is that we recently moved. It was no secret, but we never really talked about it on the blog. We are the process of building a new home that is closer to both of our work places. A few weeks ago we sold our old home and moved into an apartment while we await completion of the new one, which we should be in by the end of the year. This process of looking for and buying a new home along with selling our old one has sucked up so much of the little free time we had, especially keeping the old one ready for showings.

Laurel has done great with the move and seems to adjusted to the new daycare, though we miss her old teachers. She has grown so much in the past month. At her 15 month checkup she was in the 92 percentile with height. Her vocabulary is growing everyday as well as her ability to effectively communicate. She now uses a combination of single words, sign language, and gestures. She just had her first dentist appointment and is working on her 4th tooth.

I uploaded pictures from my parents’ visit to Dallas about a week ago. I hope some of you found them. If not, here is a link. We were still settling in to the apartment during their visit, so please excuse any mess.

Assistant Professor

A good friend recently complained about my neglect of a certain announcement on the blog. I had every intention of announcing it on the blog and even took a picture of Laurel to go along with the announcement. (No, Laurel is not going to be a big sister. At least not anytime soon… As far as we know.) I was waiting until after I signed all of the official paper work, which I have now done, and then the end of the semester hit and things just got away from me. It hasn’t been a secret, but I just never got around to posting about it. Those I have spoken to about it know that I am very excited.

So, here it is:

Starting this fall I will be an Assistant Professor, a tenure track position, at the university I recently served at as an adjunct. I will be teaching Microbiology, Advanced Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Biology and portions of General Biology. Additionally, I will have my own research lab, which I am in the process of setting up this summer. I am leaving out the name of the institution just in case we ever let the site get index by search engines again. I don’t want people who Google my name with the name of university to end up on the family blog. However, I think it is pretty clear below.

Excited for Daddy

Ph.D.

Today was an extremely long and stressful day, but it is finally over and I have a Ph.D. (Technically there is still some paperwork to be taken care of.) I was overwhelmed by all of the comments on the blog, e-mails and calls I received wishing me luck and telling me that they were praying for me. Words cannot express how much it meant to me and how much it helped me stay focused in the days leading up to the defense when all I wanted to do was anything but prepare. There will be pictures later. I am going to bed.

Big Week

This is a big week for the Cody Jr. family.  William defends his thesis on Friday and then we pack up the Uhaul on Saturday to make the move from Denver to Dallas.  Everyone is very excited.  William is obviously a tad bit stressed, but I think he will be just fine.  His parents and I will be there to show our support and be ready to celebrate with him when it is all over.  It should be a great weekend, but please keep us in your prayers for a successful defense on Friday and safe travels back to Dallas on Saturday and Sunday.

Thanksgiving will be an awesome celebration this year!

Another Random Post

I don’t have anything all that interesting to talk about, but I feel the need to make a post. I am back in Denver after a very productive trip to Dallas. Once the business part was out of the way, Kyllan and I had good time just relaxing. I decided to suck it up and went to see He’s Just Not that in to You with Kyllan… I wasn’t that into it. Maybe I will be able to talk her into seeing The Watchmen. I finally recevied my XBox 360 back after getting the “Red Ring of Death” last month. Acutally, it is a brand new console, complete with new serial number.  I might actually get to play some video games this weeked.

The Drive to Work

I have a 20 mile, 30 minute drive to work each morning, so I tend to listen to the radio.  One of the best things about my new car is XM satellite radio.  My favorite morning show is Gayle King’s (Oprah’s best friend) show on XM 156, the Oprah and Friends network.  She generally starts out talking about current events or her plane trips from NYC to LA or how she “love love loves” Barack Obama, the color yellow, talking with people, her favorite son Will, and her favorite daughter Kirby.  The second half hour consists of interviews with different people of interest (recording artists, actors, authors, entrepreneurs, chefs, etc).  I enjoy her interviews and her show in general.  I also enjoy when they play the theme music to the once popular show “Charles in Charge” when her lawyer (Charles the lawyer) comes on the air.   Her show keeps me laughing and smiling on my drive.  Rodney Pete and Holly Robinson Pete also have a show on XM 156, but it comes on at noon my time, so unless I am in the car going to a lunch meeting, I usually miss hearing it.  Occasionally I hear the “Rabbi Shmuley’s Show also”.  Yes… he really is a rabbi and his show is about parenting, but often brings up some good points or things to consider.

Anyway… that’s my plug for XM Radio.  There are a lot of good stations, but I tend to listen to just a few, actually yesterday I listen to a finance podcast and it was so interesting, they mention the pay stubs maker for payments and it would work perfect for my business.  When I am not listening to the Oprah and Friends Network, I listen to “Suite 62”.  Suite 62 is also what I listen to while cleaning the house (we have DirecTV, so we can get the XM stations on the television also).  I love it!
